Response to Haiti Earthquake: What we can do

17 Jan 2010

In response to the earthquake in Haiti this week, we will be showing a video from Tearfund at this week's Sunday services, explaining what we can do to help.

No doubt we have all heard about the terrible earthquake that struck in Haiti this week. St Matthew's have supported the work of Christian organisation Tearfund for many years, and so in response to the earthquake, we would encourage members of the church once again to give to Tearfund and the fantastic work they are able to do in these desperate times. The other key role we can play is to pray, and Tearfund have provided a powerpoint presentation of prayer points which can be found on the website, or via one of the links below.

The following information is taken from the Tearfund website:

Tearfund is dispatching emergency aid funds to help survivors of the earthquake that has shattered impoverished Haiti.

Thousands of people are missing feared dead after a quake measuring seven on the Richter Scale struck the Caribbean island on 12 January.

Many buildings have been destroyed or badly damaged in the capital Port-au-Prince, including the presidential palace and the five-storey UN offices.

Tearfund is in Haiti now, responding to this disaster. They have teams of people on the ground in Port-au-Prince, working to help provide for the people's needs in whatever ways they can.

Tearfund is also part of the DEC joint-agency appeal for Haiti. If you'd prefer to give to the DEC, rather than Tearfund, please click here.
